I wonder what record executive came up with the notion of "covering" a song? In anycase I got to wondering, the majority of cover songs plain ol' suck! Once in a while, you get some gems in the cover song genre.
So with that in mind, I was wondering if you gents, and gals, list well done cover songs, the artist who covered it and the original artist.
I'll start with some well done cover songs (IMO).
The Cure - Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix) Transmission - Hot Chip (Joy Division) Cat Stevens - Another Saturday Night (Sam Cooke) Dave Matthews Band - Long Black Veil (Lefty Frizzell) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)
P.S. All the covers for "Sympathy for the Devil" suck, so don't list it.
P.S.S. When will someone cover "Seventeen" by Winger?

Right now my favorite cover is Careless Whisper. Seether does a great job covering a George Micheal song.

1. Zeppelin - No Quarter - Tool
2. Floyd - Welcome to the Machine - Finger Eleven 3. Aerosmith - Dream On - Soundgarden 4. Springsteen - Cover Me - Lita Ford 5. Gary Newman - Cars - Fear Factory Unfortunately most of these covers are all LIVE performances I've been lucky enough to see. The Tool version of No Quarter can still be found on YT, the rest perhaps on Torrent? Cheers

I was always intrigued by Blue Swede's unorthodox cover (ooga-chacka, ooga-chacka) of B.J. Thomas's "Hooked on a Feeling." What were they thinking? On a related note, I've always loved the late 60's psychedelic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" by the Status Quo. If this hasn't charted since as a cover version, it certainly is due.

I like acoustic guitar renditions, so Boyce Avenue comes to mind. They only have one album of their own music, the rest are covers over various artists from Sarah McGloughlin (SP?) to Chris Brown.

If you like faster music, check out Me First & the Gimme Gimmes
Its a punk rock band made up from members of NOFX, Foo Fighters, Swingin' Utters and others. (They frequently have guest artists too). They are clearly a "fun" band with lots of joking around (they often change the lyrics slightly like in their cover of Billy Joel's Only the good die young instead of "you never thought of me when you were counting on your roseary" they sing "You didnt count on me, when you considered trying sodomy"). Other times they sing the songs "straight" but that makes it just as funny (You make me feel like a natural woman, or Nothing compares to you). Some of their songs work, some dont, but most are fun. You might be surprised how good (often better) songs can sound when sped up and played harder. A 5 minute eagles song becomes 2 1/2 minutes of punk harmonies. I especially love their covers of country songs (which is odd because i hate country) - their work with the dixie chick's "earl," Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and a couple of songs from Johnny Cash are awesome. I have them on constant rotation when Im biking hard or using my chainsaw for long periods of time. Definitely worth a listen. ;)

I just found, of all people, Kylie Minogue covering "Love is the Drug" by Roxy Music. Well done. Also, Fobia's cover of "Under Pressure" by Queen.
