The Torrent idea is GREAT - if the server would actually seed them

  Votes: 0
Im loving skindig, overall its a great upgrade, but the torrents simply dont work... I download torrents from many other places and have never had a problem with any of them... I have 5 from skindig thatve been sitting at 0% for a week, they just dont work.   Im not a tard, Im not a noob to torrenting, my program works fine.

Were the files uploaded more than a week ago? HITW only seeds the torrent for its first week, after that it's up to users(or you can pay and get a HTTP download from HITW/Skindig).

When reconceptualizing these sites one of the major issues we wanted to deal with is making the community more inclusive. The HITW started out as a free adjunct to the 'Pad board, but when it became a victim of it's own popularity it was no longer possible to eat the ever-growing expenses, forcing us to introduce the Archive fee.

Over time, though, the board and the site disassociated themselves, and often seemed to become competitors in the minds of some members. We got angry complaints about the HITW reposting material that someone on the 'Pad found "First," or moderators deleting posts so HITW could steal their glory. But statistically, way more folks were viewing/downloading material on the HITW than were interacting on the board, so it felt like a failure to this community we've all built.

One goal for SkinDig, then, is to give everyone ways to contribute to a single, ultimate archive. Since not everyone can justify the expense of subscriptions in this economy, we wanted to make sure that there were alternative options for accessing older material that we can't afford to make publically available because of server/bandwidth costs.

The SkinDig server keeps track of everything, and soon every member will have their own personal page to customize. The more material you share, the more archive access you earn. And if you don't have the ability to share content or write posts/stories that others value, you can seed torrents to earn privledges.

Obviously not all of that is publically emphasized yet, and the newer torrents won't be kept seeded beyond the 7 days until more of the community migrates over here. I think we're off to a good start so far, though, and even if not everything is in place yet, people can still begin working on the foundation.

For example, Tokkitok posted some Kate Beckinsale candids he found on a fansite that got a lot of people excited. If he had uploaded them to SkinDig first instead of a third party host, the server would be keeping track of all the replies his thread got, all the unique views the images received, and all the high votes people scored them, now and forever. Once we have the reward system in place, he would then have his earned access to Archived material already "in the bank," so to speak. And as long as people kept seeding the torrents, their efforts would also be acknowledged.

In this way we all are working towards the growth of one, epic site, and people have the initiative to go out and unearth rare material the none of us would ever see otherwise.

Sorry to be long-winded, but there are things we haven't fully spelled out for everyone yet, and I hope this was a sufficient explantion for this one particular goal we're working to achieve.

Sounds great mouse!  Makes a lot more sense now how thats all going to work, and I for one am excited to get this party started.  I have insane content to share.  Unfortunately Im stuck with 30k/s upload but I should be moving soon to an area offering FIOS which is going to boost the hell out of my upload speed which means A LOT more participation.

I never knew about the battle between the pad and hitw.  I had always seen the pad as the hitw forum, I just figured the pics that hit hitw were the cherry picked best from the pads content section selected out by mods and gangsters.

With that knowledge I think youre right, I think skindig is going to be a much better system.  I'm loving the idea of having our own pages to customize that showcase exactly what we've done and have to offer.  I cant speak for everybody but I know Im not alone in saying Im REAL tired of seeing peoples worth be directly linked with their postcount.  It makes sense that someone with 10 posts shouldnt be telling a 3237 poster how things go and what theyre going to do, but at the same time I only had like 500 posts on my pad account, but they were mostly all posts of worth, either sharing content or thanking others that had.  I think 500 posts of content sharing beats out 2500 of 'thx, thx, thx, thx, thx, thx, thx'.  This new way will go a lot further to show what a member has actually done in the community and I for one stand and applaud the efforts being made to better this for all of us!

Ok, they worked well in the past weeks...at least for files still available for free. Don't know about the share of files not more available, but I assume they'll work fine once people become more confident with Skindig.

The fact is that there must be some problem on the tracker, because now I can't download last updates...I mean those that are still available, of course.  Anyone else having this problem?

thanks :)

Our server seeding program is still a little flakey, and is prone to crashing occasionally. I had to restart it this morning, but it should be working again.

There was some old HITW content brought over to Skindig that I tried to download through a torrent, but I couldn't get any data moving.  I guess one day I'll just have to pay the fee...

The torrents are only seeded by the server for the first week. Anything beyond that, it's up to the community to seed.

I have been a big fan of the pad and hitw since inception.  So when I first started looking in to this new site, i decided to finally register, because i appreciate the goals of this new site, as stated in this thread.  May I make a few comments and a suggestion..   I have been in technology sales for 20 years, but i don't know jack about torrents, winrar, seeding, divx, splitting, etc.  I am a futurist who dreams of a true peer-to-peer matrix, and yet i know fuckall about how to do this shit using today's technology.  Those of you who never knew analog technology have a certain arrogance which betrays the community spirit you seem to advocate.

I have some never-posted-anywhere phoebe cates candids taken when she 16 (tops only, sorry), but unless I can quickly get up to speed on how to participate, i don't have the time to learn this crap on my own.... so PLEASE post a frickin FAQ on how to *participate*.   EXPLAIN in plain language, how to seed, download, and play torrents.  SPELL IT OUT.  Or catalog the urls that spell it out.  In an FAQ.   THANK YOU.
